MMD Shipping Chill Store

MMD Shipping operates a 12-warehouse facility that receives and distributes all varieties of fresh fruit to the British market. One of the largest importers of fresh fruit in the United Kingdom, MMD Shipping's inbound facility in the City of Portsmouth handles roughly 60% of all bananas brought into the UK.

Working with Elite Renewables, a Dialight authorised distributor and installation contractor, a trial of the Dialight product mounted at 12 metres delivered superior light output with 320lux being measured at floor level. Factoring in Dialight's 5 year, full-performance warranty, MMD had found its new high-efficiency lighting solution for the new cold storage facility.

The company installed 134 Dialight 150W High Bays, with an additional 16 80W Low Bay units in the indoor and outdoor loading bay areas. Each fitting is linked to an occupancy sensor which has cut the on-time by approximately 70%.

Due to the LED's superior performance in cold applications, the fixtures in the chill store actually deliver more than the advertised lumen output, thanks to the ambient temperature of 5°C. And with the exceptionally low heat output, the entire cold storage locker runs more efficiently with less refrigeration demand to maintain optimum temperature.

LED lighting has cut energy consumption and cost and the expected payback is due to be achieved within 2 years. As well as the increase in lighting levels, there is also the added benefit of reducing annual maintenance costs. Due to this, MMD Shipping have subsequently installed a further 404 fittings in all of their existing warehouses.
