Case study
LED lighting
Marston Vale Middle School Sports Hall
Marston Vale Middle School is located in Stewartby Bedfordshire and has over 500 pupils. The school contacted Elite Renewables with a view to upgrading the old lighting in the sports hall to the latest LED technology.
The CIBSE lighting guidelines for sports halls require an average of 300 lux, and following an on-site survey and computer-aided lighting design simulation it was concluded that the existing 16 400W SON lamps should be replaced with the same number of Dialight 150W LED high bays to achieve this level of illumination.
The school is a training centre for Bedfordshire County Cricket Club and it was important that the practice nets in the sports hall were well lilluminated. To supplement the lighting upgrade an additional 7 Dialight LED 14,000 lumen high bays were installed directly above the cricket nets to boost light levels in this area to an average of more than 600 lux. As an additional benefit the 75 twin fluorescent tubes fittings which had been used for the cricket practice sessions were now redundant.
The school has calculated that it will have made a return on its investment in just 1.4 years and will save over £5,000 per year off its electricity bills.
